• The 12x16in works well in both orientations. Used upright it's a classic portrait canvas; turned on its side it gives a landscape ratio slightly wider than 3:4.

What's the gesso surface like for impasto techniques?

• Triple gesso priming gives enough surface tooth for impasto and palette knife work. For particularly heavy impasto, adding an additional ground layer (e.g., gesso mixed with coarse sand) can add extra texture if desired.
