When would I use 4B instead of 2B?

• 4B is for work where you want deep dark tones and expressive, flowing marks. 2B is better for detailed sketching where you still need to maintain a reasonably fine point. Many artists use both in the same drawing.

Will a 4B tip break easily?

• Softer grades are more prone to tip breakage if dropped or sharpened under excessive pressure. Sharpen gently with a quality sharpener and the tip will last well through normal drawing use.

Can 4B marks be erased?

• 4B graphite erases well with a plastic or kneadable eraser, though very dark dense deposits may leave a ghost. A kneadable eraser is gentler on the paper surface for soft-grade graphite. ---
