Journey to Becoming Australia's Most Green Brand

Journey to Becoming Australia's Most Green Brand

  Going Green

In 2010, a lot of brands in Australia were starting to introduce green brands, and they were small ranges of the same product, but more environmentally friendly, and in turn, more expensive. They were around 25 percent more expensive. At Micador, we decided to go green because it was the right thing to do.

“It wasn’t about marketing,” says Owner and Managing Director, Ben Dortimer, “Let’s actually do something good for the world.”

We started working through a list of our top 200 products, determining where we could make significant changes to their sustainability, without passing on the cost of green. That was something we would contribute. Now it’s a huge part of what we do and along with quality, safety and value, sustainability has become a non-negotiable pillar in the business. With every product we use we ask ourselves, how can we make this more green? Can we use recycled plastics? Can we use recycled paper? Can we make the packaging FSC certified?

“With everything we do, we are always thinking, how can we make this product more green?” says Head of Product & Brands, Colinda Raven.

Micador was one of the first companies in this industry to get a FSC Certification, the Forestry Stewardship Council, so all our timber and paper was certified. It’s an independent organization and they audit the supply chain from the forest, all the way through to the product.

green eARTh Collection

In 2010, Micador launched its green eARTh collection, and in 2020, we decided we wanted to publicly commit that by the end of 2023, every product that used paper, wood or board would be FSC certified. We’ve worked hard over the last few years with our suppliers to remove the use of single-use plastics and we’ve been able to reduce the use of single-use plastics by 80 to 90 percent and we plan to eradicate that completely in the next 12 to 18 months.

Vegan Friendly and Cruelty Free

We know that being vegan friendly and cruelty free is becoming more important to artists, as it is to us, so we’re developing products that satisfy those criteria and desires of people. Some of the ways Micador is doing this is by replacing animal hair on brushes with synthetic hair and ensuring our products are as allergy-free as possible.

Sustainability is pivotal to Micador’s direction, as it’s the only way we can preserve our ecosystems for future generations. We’re on a journey to becoming Australia’s most green brand.

“We're really starting to talk about ourselves now as the spark. We want big businesses to look as us and think, ‘well hang on, if Micador is that good at green, why aren’t we doing better?’” says Dortimer.
